Predictions For Digital Signage In 2016

Its that time of year again when the team at L Squared looks ahead to the trends expected in the next twelve months.

Digital Signage, as a marketing channel, is no longer the unknown little sister of web, email and social marketing. Powerful new technologies, like the L Squared Hub CMS, brings multiple advertising and marketing channels together to offer targeted information at the right times.

Next year will be a time when marketing and HR staff adopt, en mass, digital signage CMS tools to promote customer and employee facing messages with the most possible impact.

The proliferation of centrally managed digital sign networks displayed on the shop floor, in offices and public spaces has the led to an explosion of interaction. Since consumers’ needs drive business, digital software marketers will face the big 2016 challenge of optimizing their brand’s influence at point of purchase.

Interaction with digital posters and signs will continue to explode in offices and other corporate buildings throughout 2016. Use of signs as an employee engagement and education tools is on the rise as HR and Communications teams harness digital signage content management software.

Why Retrofitting Digital Signage Saves Big Money

We come across a fair number of customers who already have some kind of electronic LCD’s or Televisions installed in their business. Maybe they use them for information, maybe they use them for entertainment. Either way, at some point, they realized or decided that enhancing the screen into Digital Signage made better business sense than how they are currently being used.

banking

Banks, Retailers, Hospitals, Schools and Plants are prime locations where TV’s can easily be converted.

This article is designed to advise such customers who have already invested in some type of LCD or TV screen in the past, that the option to simply retrofit might be a huge savings winner and really help accelerate your company ROI  around Digital Signage.

But first, let’s set the context on why this makes sense.

Business Case:

Most Enterprise and reliable Digital Signage involves three (3) components:

1) Software

2) Hardware

3) Set-Up, Support and Updates

Step 3 is more of a formality and is often blended into the License cost of the software or some professional services fee. But looking at Step 1, we explore the Software; most often represented “as a service”. You purchase or acquire a license to the software which might include some kind of Support, Updates, Hosting and Program Access. In Digital Signage, this is a per unit cost (unit referring to a Media Player / small Pc). Costs can range from .50 cents a day per player up to $4.00.

Next up is Step 2, the Hardware. Once you find a software that you like, feel comfortable with and matches your business goals, it becomes time to look at the capital part of the project. Hardware for Digital Signage usually involves an LCD/LED Screen, a small PC (Media Player in the industry) and some kind of mounting structure (like wall or ceiling). The whole purpose of this article was to demonstrate an excellent way to cut costs in hardware while upgrading or implementing very functional software. Here’s how:

Most Digital Signage companies (at least the top 50 in the world) all have a certain media player they standardize on. It’s been tried and tested. Think of it like car manufacturers. Jaguar doesn’t use Toyota engines and Ford doesn’t use Volkswagen. But they all might have a V6, so the engines are similar. It’s the same for Media Players in the Digital Signage industry. It’s recommended to just stick with what your provider suggests (as long as it’s under $500 USD.. but that’s another Blog!).

That leaves your screen and your mount. In many cases, a customer might have installed a screen in the last 4-5 years. In many cases, the screens have not been overused. They might look a little dated, but otherwise turn on and off perfectly. And that brings us to the heart of the matter. When your company is looking to move forward with Digital Signage, do your best to try and save any existing screens you might have. Don’t be fooled. As long as the TV has an HDMI input and is 1080P,  it should handle any media player that you throw on the back or slide in. The screen itself is usually the highest single item cost, and if the company ego can squeeze a couple more years out of existing screens, you create a real ROI case for yourself.

If you’re not sure about your screen, you have two options: either get a chair and look behind (or take a pic of the model # and google it, or ask a service provider or vendor to make a recommendation.

Obviously any vendor would like to increase the sale with additional hardware and thousands in tv costs. But most software vendors focus on the software, and will (or should) be doing their best to make what you have work. And then, you have the option of replacing screens either as they die, or in small batch sections (either based on geography or department).

In the case of L Squared, we often ship the media players out, have our install team retrofit them to existing screens, connect to the network and are off and running in no time.

If you are not sure how to proceed, or if what advise you should be getting, please reach out to an L Squared rep and one of our Project Managers will always spare a few minutes to discuss anything on your mind.

Digital Signage Solutions for HR Departments: Connecting with Employees

The problem of lack of communication has its roots in that people share information. However that information is passed on is interpreted different ways. If passed by word of mouth, it becomes highly subjective to memory. If passed by print materials and one person read them and shared the info, it becomes subjective to user takeaways (Missed the point, shares the negative).

It is inside these corporate challenges where Digital Signage has taken a foothold.  It simply allows a business to have one voice, in a communal environment that can make a team impact. Rarely do other technologies have such an immediate and team oriented affect.

Now, the trick is for Global HR to take hold of such technologies and empower their communication footprint company wide.

Connecting with Employees

If you look around, you will see that digital screens are predominant in areas with high traffic such as entrances, lunch rooms, lobbies and employee corridors.

Digital signages are basically television screens that display customized information on the television screen.

It is like creating a television channel for promoting any content that you think is valuable for your company. Each of the sections can be carved out individually, just like cutting a cake. And each of these sections can be managed by the various departments of your company. As an HR professional, you can take the responsibility of scheduling the content within those sections that will circulate for 24 hour a day.

How Helpful is This Technology?

The greatest advantage or help that digital signages offer is that you can create content that is unique and customized. These contents include safety posters, videos for employee training, Power Point based slides, newsletters, latest marketing collateral, etc.

You will have to find the right audience even among your employees for each message that you communicate through digital signages. In this way, you can communicate clearly and transparently with all your employees.

With the help of digital signage solutions, the latest ones being touch screen based displays, HR professionals can advance their communication skills with employees, and contribute towards the growth of the company.

Digital Signage Gives HR Powerful New Options

signmen1038

HR and People Management is a vital function in most organizations. To make the HR department effective, the task of finding innovative ways of being able to connect, engage, influence and support staff is tougher than ever.

Large industries and their sub-sectors such as Manufacturing, Retail and Wholesale  have staff members who are paid on hourly basis, and it is essential that important details are circulated through effective communication.

This has historically been very difficult for HR professionals to achieve.

Although, sticking important printouts on notice boards and using wall posters have helped these professionals in a prominent way, the task of effective communication has become more challenging, especially in industries where new labor gets added on a regular basis/companies with a high ‘churn’.

Our Big Five Predictions for Digital Signage in 2015

Wow! Its 2015 already?! Well let’s go fellow Digital Signage enthusiasts!

2015 is going to be a big year for the industry. L Squared is pleased to say that we’re involved in some of the biggest projects coming out of North America in the coming months. Spoilers.. more to come on that later.

For now let’s take an overview of what could happen in Digital Signage this year. Here are our top 5 predictions:

1. Digital Signage finally becomes a mainstay of the ‘standard digital marketing mix’

2015 will be the year that Digital Signage comes out of the shadows and fits firmly at the heart of integrated marketing campaigns.

Better Digital Signage CMS technology and more intelligent content scheduling has laid the foundations for this year to see general adoption of digital signage along side other forms of advertising and the more established marketing channels such as social and email.

Digital Marketing

2. HR gets involved:

As Marketing bosses bring Digital Signage into budgets, so too will HR. We’d predict that it will still be a while until HR really embraces the internal communications power which the channel offers but events like socialhrcamp are already paving the way for Digital Signage to fill an important employee engagement gap.

3. iBeacons and NFC proliferate

iBeacons and NFC are technologies that are sparking tests, concepts and consternation among digital signage network operators and software providers. In 2015, Apple will unlock its NFC chip, opening up a wave of adoption. iBeacon tests will spread quickly.

Both approaches will endure, but with differing use cases. There does not appear to be a clear path to integration with digital signage for the push technology, iBeacon.

We predict that, for now, the pull technology of NFC, bolstered by payment systems, will have more relevance to digital signage as there are logical integration points.

4. Content rationalization steps forward

The coming trend in content will be automated tools for autocorrecting content encoding to optimize playout on digital signs or other platforms.

HTML has won the battle for the hearts and minds of both content producers and software providers. We’ll see tools, like L Squared’s Hub, which make assets useful across mediums (responsive) in an automated way.

5. Digital Signage A.K.A Public Video

There’s been a lot of noise recently about rebranding our technology as “Public Video”.

Will the DPAA, (formerly OVAB), become the PVAA? Our prediction is that the term ‘Digital Signage’, even if its not to the liking of some Sales and Branding types, is probably here to stay but who knows! The sector is growing and diversifying so quickly that we may well be called L Squared Public Video by the time we make predictions for 2016. We hope not as it would mean a logo redesign 🙂

L Squared CEO in the News Again!

Our CEO, Gajendra Ratnavel is fast becoming a celebrity in the world of Digital Signage. Here’s his latest interview focusing on the future of Corporate communications and why the company decided to sponsor SocialHRCamp.

Editor: Tell us a bit about your personal career history and what brought you to your current company?

Gajendra Ratnavel, CEO, L Squared Networks
Gajendra Ratnavel, CEO, L Squared Networks

GR: I’m a techie at heart and by trade – my degree was in Computer Engineering and I’ve always had an ambition to use my enthusiasm and experience within digital and technical communications to offer powerful services and innovative products. After around six years as a technical Project Manager (and Software Engineer) at National Instruments and then Allegro Wireless, I decided it was time to set sail as captain of my own ship, so to speak. In 2005 I founded L Squared and I’m proud to say that, through offering top end-to-end Digital Signage solutions, we’ve grown the company to become an internationally recognised brand within Screen Media.

Editor: Can you tell us a bit about what your company does for HR professionals?

GR: Sure. Through our mounted screens, kiosks and digital wayfinding we help facilitate and enhance corporate communications.  For example, we help manufacturing plants, conference venues and engage with their employees through centrally managed, targeted company messages and updates.

Its amazing really! Digital Signage, as opposed to a company intranet or email is SO much more powerful! Not just because of the vastly more engaging and attractive dynamic content a HR or Comms team can present to employees but because of the huge amount of time that a digital screen gets to inform and influence.

Think about it logically – unlike a company memo which may or may not even get opened, when one is in, say, a canteen with cool digital screens mounted on wall, employees become far more likely to watch, absorb and respond because the screens will be in line of sight for maybe 30 minutes during a lunch break.

Editor: What is your target market? Please tell us a bit about typical companies which use your services?

GR: Our market is wide and deep. We service and target small to Enterprise level companies across Canada, USA and Europe. Generally, we work most closely with HR professionals plus those in Operations, Comms and Marketing.

Editor: How does your product/service help HR professionals?

GR: The average time that a digital screen gets to engage with an individual in a retail environment is 8 to 12 seconds. Not only is that average WAY higher than most other marketing and communication channels but, as in the canteen example, sometimes the opportunity of a ‘captive audience’ can go to 10s of minutes. This is huge for HR! That’s because it provides a proven opportunity for HR professionals to communicate in real time and with scheduled messages with a much higher attraction rate than anything else out there – apart from maybe the traditional company town hall meeting.

Editor: In your opinion, what will be the big HR and social media technological shifts and patterns of adoption in the workplace in the next 5 years?

GR: I’m an engineer, not a HR professional so my predictions are slanted as such. For me, I see a rapid adoption of easy to use, web-hosted services which don’t just allow for better collaboration and measurement but also fosters better employee branding through deeper levels of staff engagement.

Editor: There are more hands-on sessions to help HR professionals strategically use social media and emerging HR/Recruitment technology at this year’s ‘unconference’ than ever before. The Camp’s session facilitators are experts in the fields of HR, Recruitment, Marketing, Social Media, Learning, Leadership and more, and will also be active participants throughout the day. Will your company be presenting a session?

GR: We absolutely will. Yes. We’ll be hosting an interactive session on new screen technologies and how HR pros can use Digital Signage content management systems and their cool widgets to grow social media followings, brand awareness and convey the all-important corporate messages to staff.

Editor: Who will be speaking and what will be the topic(s) and learning outcomes?

GR:  It is likely going to be myself and our Director of Business Development, Brent Nacu. The topics have already been touched on I think but the learning outcomes will include understanding types of non-mainstream CMS and we’re hoping to offer a special free trial of our CMS to session attendees.

Editor: How does SocialHRCamp fit with your brand objectives?

GR: By being a sponsor and a session host we hope to raise awareness of the L Squared brand and help educate attendees about the latest cost effective digital communications options available.

Editor: Why did your company choose to get involved with SocialHRCamp and what results are you hoping from the sponsorship?

GR: Despite a compelling case for using digital signage to enhance corporate communications, for some reason our industry struggles to make HR professionals aware of how we can help make their jobs easier.

When we heard about SocialHRCamp and its focus on technology and employee engagement we just knew that we had to get involved! The Results? I’d say lead generation but my Marketing Director would probably say brand exposure. It would be good to get both from the event.

Editor: With low adoption of social media and HR technology within the HR Community it’s important that we introduce new technologies and push attendees beyond their comfort zones. How are you planning on doing this at SocialHRCamp Toronto 2014?

GR: The L Squared Hub is our SaaS CMS. Not going to say too much more on that for now other than will let our software speak for itself at the event!

Editor: How can people learn more about your services?
